Dental Phobia
By Romi Cristaudo, Clinical Hypnotherapist | Newcastle Clinical Hypnotherapy
Dental anxiety affects millions of people and can stop you from getting the care you need — but there are supportive treatment options beyond medication.
Why it matters
Hypnotherapy is a non-invasive tool that can complement regular dental treatments — helping you feel calmer, more relaxed, and better prepared for your appointments. Many patients find it an empowering way to manage fear with fewer medications or sedation.
• More than 90% of the patients in dental practice have positive attitudes toward hypnosis.
Scientific studies show that hypnosis and hypnotherapy can help reduce anxiety during dental procedures, especially when used as an adjunct to regular care. In one controlled trial of over 100 patients undergoing tooth removal, those who received hypnosis reported significantly lower anxiety levels during treatment than those who didn’t.

Dental Phobia & Clinical Hypnotherapy: A Gentle, Evidence-Based Approach
Dental phobia is far more common than people realise. For some, it’s a mild sense of unease. For others, the thought of a dental appointment can trigger intense anxiety, panic symptoms, avoidance, or even physical reactions such as nausea or dizziness.
Using a clinical, strategic approach to hypnotherapy we can help to navigate some of the cognitive patterns that are often present. We can start to address helping people to feel more in control around their thoughts and to be more in touch with the realities of their fears rather than the story that they are perceiving to be true. Spending time breaking down real risk assessment around the fear is often a helpful path to take. Looking at what is possible versus what is probable.
Helping to break down fears and relieve the elevated response to their phobia is also an important part of the process. By taking this approach people often report feeling more in control in dental settings, and the ripple effect into other areas of their life becomes apparent as anxiety in general is reduced as people feel calmer and safer. Feelings of confidence and self belief are often boosted.
Clinical hypnotherapy can be a powerful and supportive tool in helping people feel calmer, safer, and more in control in dental settings.
How hypnotherapy helps with dental phobia
Dental fear is often driven by the subconscious mind rather than logic. Even when someone knows the dentist is safe, the body may still react as if there’s a threat. Hypnotherapy works at this deeper level, helping to:
• Reduce the body’s automatic fear response
• Re-train the nervous system to feel safer in dental environments
• Separate past experiences from present-day dental care
• Increase feelings of control, calm, and choice
• Support relaxation before and during appointments
Many people are surprised to find that once the fear response softens, their confidence naturally increases.
What happens in a hypnotherapy session?
Hypnotherapy is not about losing control or being “put under.” You remain aware and in control the entire time. In a relaxed, focused state, your mind becomes more receptive to helpful suggestions and new associations.
Sessions may include:
• We can work to anchor in feelings of safety and security along with an ability to be able to sit through moments of discomfort.
All of this and more is possible by harnessing the tool of hypnotherapy to create a better dental experience for people experiencing the many levels of fear or worry that you may be living with.
Is hypnotherapy suitable for dental anxiety?
Clinical hypnotherapy is particularly helpful for:
• Fear of pain, needles, or loss of control
• Panic attacks related to dental visits
• Long-standing avoidance of dental care
It can be used on its own or alongside dental treatment, helping clients feel more prepared and supported.
A calmer experience is possible
Dental phobia doesn’t mean you’re weak or “overreacting.” It means your nervous system learned to protect you — and it can learn something new. With the right support, many people find dental visits become manageable, neutral, or even surprisingly calm.
If dental anxiety has been holding you back, hypnotherapy offers a gentle and effective path forward.
