When Vaping Starts Taking More Than It Gives

For many people, vaping begins as something small — a moment of relief, a distraction, a social behaviour, or a way of regulating stress. But over time it can shift into something that feels harder to control. You may find yourself reaching for your vape without thinking, hiding how often you use it, or noticing that stress, boredom or certain emotions immediately trigger the urge to inhale.

You may have tried to stop before. You may have told yourself you’d quit after a holiday, after work settles down, after a stressful period eases, or “next Monday.” But the moment you try to pull back — or even imagine stopping — cravings, irritability, anxiety, restlessness or emotional discomfort rise to the surface.

This isn’t a failure of willpower.

It’s a nervous-system pattern.

Vaping affects reward pathways, emotional regulation, stress cycles and subconscious habit loops. Without working with the brain and body together, quitting can feel almost impossible — especially if vaping is tied to coping, comfort or connection.

The good news is that change is entirely possible with the right support.

A Nervous-System-Based Approach to Quitting Vaping

Romi supports clients to quit using a gentle, evidence-informed combination of EFT (Emotional Freedom Techniques), therapeutic hypnosis, somatic regulation and behavioural strategies. Her work focuses on calming the nervous system, reducing cravings, easing withdrawal-related discomfort and repatterning the subconscious habits that drive the urge to vape.

Instead of relying on willpower, this approach supports:

  • lowering the emotional intensity that fuels cravings
  • reducing stress-driven, boredom-driven or anxiety-driven urges
  • soothing the physiological discomfort that can make quitting hard
  • shifting the automatic reach response
  • building new patterns of coping
  • strengthening identity-level change (“I don’t need this anymore”)

Clients often describe feeling calmer, more in control, and less overwhelmed by cravings — making the quitting process far more achievable.

Support for Couples Quitting Together

Vaping can be a shared habit within relationships — something done during downtime, after stressful conversations, while driving, relaxing or unwinding. Because of this, many couples find quitting together challenging: one person may feel ready while the other hesitates, or both may try and inadvertently reinforce old patterns.

Romi offers a unique combination of individual and joint sessions for couples wanting to quit. This approach allows each person to work on their own triggers and emotional responses, while building shared strategies, communication and accountability. Couples often find this strengthens their connection and makes relapse less likely.

Whether both partners are ready or one is still exploring the idea, Romi supports you without pressure — meeting you exactly where you are.

What Working With Romi Looks Like

Your work together begins with understanding your unique relationship with vaping — the triggers, emotions, sensations and routines that keep the habit in motion. From there, Romi helps you address the patterns held in both mind and body through:

  • EFT to reduce cravings and settle the nervous system
  • therapeutic hypnosis to shift subconscious associations
  • somatic tools to manage restlessness, irritability and overwhelm
  • behavioural and emotional strategies to support long-term change
  • identity and motivation work
  • optional joint sessions for couples
  • relapse prevention and maintenance support

Romi is a Clinical Hypnotherapist, Strategic Psychotherapist and EFT Practitioner with a warm, grounded and supportive approach. She specialises in helping individuals and couples break unhelpful habits, calm emotional triggers, and develop healthier ways of navigating stress and overwhelm.

Her work is particularly suited to those who have tried to quit vaping before and felt stuck or discouraged. She understands the neurobiological and emotional components that keep the habit running, and she uses techniques that support both the mind and body in shifting those patterns.

Romi works collaboratively — believing that meaningful, lasting change happens when the nervous system feels supported rather than pressured. Her goal is to help you move toward a life where you are no longer governed by cravings or habits that no longer serve you.

FAQs

How many sessions will I need?
Many clients notice meaningful change within three to six sessions. The number of sessions depends on factors such as how often you vape, how long you’ve used nicotine, your stress levels and whether you’re quitting individually or as a couple.
Does this help with cravings and withdrawal?
Yes. EFT, hypnosis and somatic techniques can significantly reduce cravings, restlessness, irritability and the emotional discomfort associated with withdrawal, making quitting feel more manageable
What if I’ve tried to quit before and relapsed?
Relapse is common and not a sign of weakness. It usually means your nervous system didn’t have the support it needed. Romi’s approach directly addresses the emotional, behavioural and subconscious patterns that make relapse likely.
Can I reduce gradually, or do I have to quit abruptly?
Both are possible. Some people prefer a gradual taper, while others feel ready for a complete stop. Romi will work with you to determine what feels realistic and sustainable.
Can couples quit together?
Yes. Romi offers combined individual and joint sessions to help couples navigate the emotional, behavioural and relational aspects of quitting together. This can increase motivation and reduce relapse risk.
What if my partner isn’t ready to quit yet?
Ambivalence is normal. Each partner can begin individually, and readiness can develop over time. There is no pressure for both partners to commit at once.
Do I need a referral?
No. You can book directly.
Are Medicare rebates available?
No. Medicare does not currently provide rebates for hypnotherapy, EFT or psychosensory modalities
Do private health funds offer rebates?
Some do. Rebates vary depending on your extras provider and level of cover. You may wish to check with your insurer.
Do you offer online sessions?
Yes. Romi offers online sessions for both individuals and couples.
Do you collaborate with other healthcare providers?
Yes. With your consent, Romi can collaborate with your GP, psychologist or mental health team to support cohesive care.
