Hypnotherapy for Anxiety Treatment in Newcastle

Anxiety can begin quietly, perhaps as a sense of unease, a busy mind, or a feeling of being “on alert.” Over time, it can grow into something that affects every part of life, including sleep, relationships, digestion, confidence and your ability to think clearly.

You may find yourself constantly scanning for danger, bracing for the worst, replaying conversations, worrying about future scenarios or feeling unable to switch off.  For others, anxiety shows up in the body as nausea, stomach discomfort, tightness, dizziness, shaking, heart palpitations, breathiness or overwhelm.

Trying to push anxiety away can make it stronger.

Ignoring it can make it louder.

And talking about it alone doesn’t always shift the patterns that keep it running.

If anxiety has been taking up too much space, you don’t have to navigate it alone. Change is possible, even if it hasn’t felt that way for a long time.

While it’s normal to worry and feel stressed at times, overwhelming anxiety can disrupt your life.  When your thoughts and feelings spiral out of control, and the voice in your head becomes louder, it’s essential to seek change.

Hypnotherapy for Anxiety Treatment in Newcastle

This model of hypnotherapy for anxiety treatment is both powerful and effective, offering you the tools to manage your mental health more positively and proactively.

Our Integrated Approach to Treating Anxiety

At Newcastle Clinical Hypnotherapy, we treat anxiety using a combined framework of clinical hypnotherapy and strategic psychotherapy.  This approach works with both the mind and the nervous system, interrupting the unconscious patterns that keep anxiety looping.

Clinical hypnotherapy helps calm the body’s threat response and shift the subconscious habits that drive anxious thinking, over-monitoring and fear-based anticipation.

Strategic psychotherapy, informed by cognitive–behavioural principles, helps you recognise and change the internal processes that unintentionally maintain anxiety, such as catastrophising, mentally rehearsing danger, or avoiding discomfort.

When needed, we also integrate psychosensory and trauma-resolution modalities such as:

  • MEMI (Multichannel Eye Movement Integration)
  • Havening Techniques®
  • EMDR
  • EFT (Emotional Freedom Techniques)

These modalities support deeper emotional processing and nervous-system regulation.

Together, this approach helps clients develop clearer thinking, steadier emotions, calmer physical responses and more adaptive patterns of coping.

How We Work With Anxiety

Treatment begins with understanding how anxiety shows up for you.  The thoughts that drive it, the behaviours that reinforce it, and the physical sensations that accompany it.  From here, we work collaboratively to:

  • calm the nervous system
  • interrupt unhelpful cognitive and behavioural patterns
  • process earlier experiences when needed
  • develop new internal responses
  • build confidence and internal safety

We pace therapy to your readiness and capacity. Nothing is rushed or forced. This is a supportive process grounded in safety, clarity and collaboration.

How We Treat Anxiety With Hypnotherapy

Together, we can approach anxiety treatment from a different perspective. It’s an approach that is used throughout the world and is at the cutting edge of psychotherapy treatment in Australia. It is both powerful and scientifically supported by the latest neuroscience and mental health treatment research.

The good news is, anyone who is suffering with anxiety is running an identifiable pattern of unconscious mental and emotional patterns, that you have learned along the way.

Identifying those patterns, reveals the things we need to focus on, to get you out of the loop of suffering. We are literally breaking the chains that bind you.

Utilising the combination of Strategic Psychotherapy, NLP and Clinical Hypnosis, we work together to change the unconscious mental and emotional patterns that keep you bound by the chains of anxiety and focus instead on developing positive, useful and effective skills that allow you to transform how you respond to the world around you.

One of the benefits of this combination, let’s call it Strategic Hypnotherapy, is that it hypnotherapy is more effective in less sessions other types of behavioural therapy and psychoanalysis.

Effectiveness of Hypnotherapy

Part of the reason it’s so effective is because I tailor your anxiety treatment plan to you and your experiences. Because your circumstances and experiences are unique to you, your anxiety treatment plan should be tailored to fit you and your goals.

A wise man once said that the best way to predict the future is to create it. Together, our strategic goal is to empower you with the tools to create your own future. I have the map to get you to that place, where you can look out on your future and feel positive, safe and confident. I am going to take you to that lookout, and teach you to read the map along the way.

How does that sound?

You don’t need to have everything worked out before beginning.  If you’re curious about starting, or want guidance on which practitioner may be the best fit, you’re welcome to book an initial session or request a discovery call to discover how we can help.

Is This Right For You?

Hypnotherapy for phobias is particularly well suited to those whose fears have begun to intrude on daily life, when avoidance or anxiety feels as though it’s shaping your choices, relationships, or sense of freedom. It can be especially valuable if you’ve already explored traditional approaches such as talk therapy, Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT), or exposure work, yet still find yourself caught in the same patterns of fear or reactivity.

Clients who are open-minded and curious about the mindbody connection often find hypnotherapy deeply rewarding. It offers a gentler, more internally guided path toward change, one that allows the nervous system to settle and the subconscious mind to safely rewire its associations without the repeated distress that can sometimes accompany direct exposure therapy.

However, hypnotherapy may be less suitable in some circumstances. If you are currently experiencing untreated severe psychosis or significant mental health conditions, it’s important to have an anchoring professional such as a psychologist or psychiatrist who we can coordinate support with to ensure stability and safety before beginning hypnosis-based work.

Meaningful progress in hypnotherapy depends on engagement, both within and between sessions. Those who are unwilling to participate actively in the process or work with tasking between sessions may find the work less effective. Ultimately, hypnotherapy thrives on collaboration: it is a therapeutic alliance built on trust, curiosity, and the shared intention to move gently but powerfully beyond fear.

FAQ

How does hypnotherapy help with anxiety?
Clinical hypnotherapy helps calm the nervous system and gently shift the subconscious patterns that keep anxiety cycling. It supports you to move into a focused, relaxed state where the mind becomes more receptive to new ways of responding. This allows anxious habits such as overthinking, fear-based anticipation or bodily hyperreactivity to soften, so you can rebuild a clearer, steadier internal experience.
What is strategic psychotherapy, and why is it part of anxiety treatment?
Strategic psychotherapy is a CBT-informed approach that helps you understand the internal processes that unintentionally maintain anxiety, such as mentally running ahead, imagining worst-case scenarios, checking for danger or avoiding uncertainty. Instead of analysing anxiety endlessly, strategic psychotherapy teaches you how to interrupt these processes so the nervous system no longer “runs” them automatically. Over time, clients develop more adaptive cognitive and behavioural patterns, resulting in a calmer day-to-day experience.
How is treatment personalised?
Anxiety presents differently in every person. Early sessions focus on understanding your specific patterns, emotional responses, thinking processes and body-based sensations. Your therapist then develops a plan integrating hypnotherapy, strategic psychotherapy and, when appropriate, modalities such as MEMI, EMDR, Havening Techniques® or EFT. The approach adapts as you progress, always moving at a pace that feels safe.
What happens in a session?
Sessions begin with exploring how anxiety is currently showing up for you. Your therapist may work with your cognitive and behavioural patterns, then guide you through hypnotherapy to support regulation and deepen internal change. When it is helpful, you may also learn simple practices to use between sessions to reinforce new patterns. You remain aware, in control and able to stop at any time. Hypnotherapy is a therapeutic and collaborative process, not a loss of consciousness.
Can this approach help if my anxiety has physical symptoms?
Yes. Many people experience anxiety primarily in the body. Because the NCH approach is grounded in nervous-system understanding and mind–body integration, these physical symptoms are worked with directly. Hypnotherapy and psychosensory techniques help settle the system so the body no longer reacts with the same intensity, making physical symptoms easier to manage and less frequent over time.
What if my anxiety is linked to trauma or long-standing emotional patterns?
If earlier experiences contribute to your anxiety, your therapist will consider whether integrating modalities such as EMDR, MEMI, EFT or Havening Techniques® is appropriate. These approaches help update emotional associations and patterns stored in the nervous system. Treatment always begins with stabilisation, safety and pacing so the work feels manageable and supportive.
How many sessions will I need?
Many clients notice meaningful changes within three to six sessions, although timelines vary. Duration is influenced by factors such as how long anxiety has been present, how intensely it shows up, whether trauma is involved and what your goals are. Some people work briefly and intensively; others prefer longer-term support. Your therapist will guide you in determining the most helpful pace.
Will I need to use strategies between sessions?
You may be offered simple practices to reinforce the changes you are making, especially within the strategic psychotherapeutic framework. These are always tailored to your capacity and are intended to support, not pressure, you. Many clients find these practices increase their sense of agency and help consolidate new patterns between appointments.
What if I’ve tried other therapies and nothing has worked?
It is common for people to come to us after trying a range of approaches. Anxiety is often maintained by subconscious patterns and nervous-system responses that talk therapy alone may not shift. The integrated nature of our work, combining hypnotherapy, strategic psychotherapy and psychosensory modalities, often helps people experience movement where they previously felt stuck.
How do I know which practitioner I should see?
All clinicians at NCH work within a combined framework of clinical hypnotherapy and strategic psychotherapy. Each practitioner also brings a specialist modality such as MEMI, EMDR, Havening Techniques® or EFT. You may choose based on practitioner bios, or we can help match you with someone whose approach aligns best with your needs. If you are unsure, a brief consultation can clarify the best starting point.
Can I work with you while also seeing a counsellor, psychologist or other therapist?
Yes. Many clients work with us alongside counselling, psychology or psychiatric care. Hypnotherapy and strategic psychotherapy complement other therapeutic approaches by working with the subconscious patterns, cognitive processes and nervous-system responses that often sit beneath anxiety. With your consent, we can collaborate with your existing therapist to ensure your support is cohesive, aligned and in your best interest. Each professional brings different strengths, and working together can create a more comprehensive and effective treatment pathway.
Do I need a referral?
No. You can book directly. However, with your consent, we can collaborate with your GP, psychologist, psychiatrist or other health professionals to support cohesive care.
Are Medicare rebates available?
Medicare does not currently offer rebates for hypnotherapy, strategic psychotherapy or psychosensory modalities.
Do private health funds offer rebates?
Some insurers offer rebates depending on your extras cover. You may wish to check with your provider.
Are online sessions available?
Yes. Hypnotherapy, strategic psychotherapy, EFT, MEMI, Havening Techniques® and EMDR preparation can all be effectively delivered online.
Is hypnotherapy safe?
Yes. Clinical hypnotherapy is a safe, therapeutic process in which you remain aware, responsive and fully in control. The aim is to create a calm, focused internal state where new patterns can be learned and integrated.
Do you provide crisis support or medication?
We do not prescribe medication or offer crisis services. If you are in immediate distress, contacting your GP, emergency services or a crisis line is the appropriate step. Hypnotherapy and strategic psychotherapy can be used alongside medical or psychiatric care where needed.
Do I need to feel “ready” before starting therapy?
No. Many people begin without knowing exactly what they need or what change will look like. Curiosity and a willingness to explore are enough. The work unfolds collaboratively, with an emphasis on pacing that feels safe for your nervous system.
